Editing the Main Menue?

I've searched all over and couldn't find any good clear documentation on this. There are links to programs which I would like to add to the main menue. There are some other which are already there, but I would like to move the placement of. So, is there any simple way to do this? I couldn't find any tools, unfortunatly, do any of you know of any, or better yet, is there one built in?

the start menu is just like in windows, everything you see in the start menu in windows is under "start menu" somewhere on your computer and everything in there gets displayed in the start menu, unfortunatly I don't know what the folder is for the start menu...if you can find that folder then you can edit it to your likeing

I am aware of this file named /usr/share/applications/ and in that file there is a list named /usr/share/applications/defaults.list

The folder contains all the links that are in my menu but I can't figure out if default.list is the thing I edit or not. The list itself doesn't make sense and doesn't even have a written line for everything in my menue. There is also /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache but I have even less of an idea what that is for and how it's written.

Since I don't use my start menu to do everything that I can do with a terminal I don't really edit it, I would suggest trying to use a terminal to do as many everyday things as possible....one of the pros in doing this, if there are any errors running a program it will display it in the terminal

if you don't like this idea I suggest googling or waiting for someone who does know how to edit the main menu to come along, and help you in the process of editing your main menu.

Have a nice day

Are you using Gnome or KDE?

I'm unsure about KDE, but I know they've locked the Gnome menu as read only.
usually you would point nautilus to applications:/// and edit it from there, now you have to do things in a bit more complicated fashion.

Now, you have to go to /usr/share/applications
There are a lot of *.desktop files. They are the actual links under the menu.
You will have to edit them with whichever editor you use.
A good starting place on how to do this would be here

For KDE, or XFCE, that's a whole other story. Good luck

in KDE just right-click on the 'K' button and click Menu Editor, or click on the 'K' button -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Menu Editor...
