With Mandrak 9.1 everthing works very well, but now with Debian I have a problem.
I have a SiS7012 soundcard in a Gericom Laptop, and I have problem if I try to play a mp3 with XMMS.
Because ther is no sound.
The error message:
** Warning ***: oss_open( ): Fail to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device.
You have compiled your own kernel? ok. Was sounds working with a basic debian kernel? Is there physicly a file called /dev/dsp? Are you using alsa or oss?
There should be no dependency between the sound architecture and X.
When you compiled your own version of 2.4.19, you would have noticed if you have alsa installed (a bunch of external modules and/or alsa-driver debian packace).
Did you chose the correct collection of modules for your sound card? If so, have you modprobed the device in question? Does it load correctly?
I got it!
I loaded my sound driver with "modprobe trident", then everthings worked.
Now I compiled my soundcard driver as fixed driver, and everthing work very well.
