Sound Problem with SiS7012!!
Hello!
With Mandrak 9.1 everthing works very well, but now with Debian I have a problem.
I have a SiS7012 soundcard in a Gericom Laptop, and I have problem if I try to play a mp3 with XMMS.
Because ther is no sound.
The error message:
** Warning ***: oss_open( ): Fail to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device.
I included the driver in my Kernel.
Thanks!
Nicart

From what I understand Debian doesn't add users to the audio group by default (ref: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=122905)
Open a terminal, and as root:
usermod -G audio [username]
Log out, then log back in. That might solve your problem.

You have compiled your own kernel? ok. Was sounds working with a basic debian kernel? Is there physicly a file called /dev/dsp? Are you using alsa or oss?

Hello!
To "Modify":
I tried with root also, and nothing worked.
To "ToniT":
->You have compiled your own kernel?
Yes, I modified a kernel 2.4.19.
->Was sounds working with a basic debian kernel?
No, but with Mandrake everything works well.
->Is there physicly a file called /dev/dsp?
Yes, but the file is empty.
->Are you using alsa or oss?
I don't know. From where I can get this information?
Does the sound depends on XFree server??
Because first I had little problems with the XFree server.

There should be no dependency between the sound architecture and X.
When you compiled your own version of 2.4.19, you would have noticed if you have alsa installed (a bunch of external modules and/or alsa-driver debian packace).
Did you chose the correct collection of modules for your sound card? If so, have you modprobed the device in question? Does it load correctly?

Thanks!
I got it!
I loaded my sound driver with "modprobe trident", then everthings worked.
Now I compiled my soundcard driver as fixed driver, and everthing work very well.
Thank you for you fast answers!
Frank
