segfault with svgalib on a compaq contura 4300cx

Hello,

I tried to set up svgalib on a Compaq Contura 4300CX notebook (w/ Debian 3.0). As the debian version (the one you get with apt-get) didn't work (because of a segmentation fault when trying to run an application that uses svgalib), I downloaded the source (version 1.4.3) and compiled it, but I still get segfaults when running svgalib apps. Is it maybe that the video chip isn't supported somehow?
Anyway, all this is really bugging me, because I need to view pictures on that machine.

Thanks in advance,

Doktor Prokt
