recompile kernel to enable highmem

Hello,

I have a dedicated box which is unmanaged... the only issue I have is that the kernel has not been compiled with highmem on which does not allow me to access my full 2GB ram.

Because I am with an unmanaged host they will not do it for me of course. I would like to try to do this but do not want to crash the system or end up getting a kernel panic since the box is live and has my websites on them.

Someone did mention that I may have a problem since I am using sata drives. Anyone have any suggestions on how I should do this? If anyone has excellent knowledge in doing this, I don't mind paying to have it done.

The kernel version is 2.4.27-2 and I have the kernel config file.

Thanks!

Make sure you have the sources for your kernel installed. (hint: this might be a good time to transfer your system to the new 2.6 kernel ) One of the best HOWTO's I've found on building a new kernel can be found here: http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/K...ild-HOWTO.html I've followed it for several new kernels I've build, although I admit not remotely. Doing a kernelbuild remotely is technically certainly possible, but I won't recommend it as you may end up driving to the ISP-facility to reboot and/or rescue your system...

I think its the remote part that is a bit scary.... I won't have access to the data center... if there is a problem, the best they can do is re-install the OS... which would suck. =)

Hmmm, I see... Just a thought though: you may try to build the new kernel on a local machine, but as a .deb package. Then copy it to the server and install it with dpkg. Problem is: you'd probably end up with a lot of dependencies when you're doing a 2.6 kernel. For the 2.4 kernel you should be ok on that.
