Exclamation loading gui fails

After installing and booting, I am left with a failure of a gui loading. The cursor works, but no menus load and the background is garbelled- 4 big horizontal b&w stripes, with a little multi-coloured snow on top.

Getting to CL works, with ctrl+alt+F2.

I can think of three possibilities off the top of my head.

Video card problem? A likely cause.
Bad installation disc?
A bug in the OS? You have Voyage listed with your name. I am not familiar with it.

You could provide some details about your hardware.
Does Voyage have any documentation that might help?

This is a clean fresh install of debian, nothing else. There might be some kind I gpu acceleration issue? I remember there was some kind of issue with it before..but it definitely worked for a basic 2d desktop.. It is nvidia integrated gfx.let me know if there is anything else you want me to provide.

Can you post the outputs of lsmod and lspci, and can you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log? (you can attach it as a separate file in your post, instead of copy/pasting it). Also, which Debian version are you using?

Regards.

According to several bug reports I found, there seems to be an issue with your card model when using nouveau (the open source driver for nVidia cards). It seems switching to the nvidia proprietary driver solves the issue. Take a look at this on how to install it.

BTW, the file I suggested to attach as a separate file was Xorg.0.log only, because it usually is too large to fit in one post; for the lspci and lsmod outputs, it's better to use the code tags. No problem, though; just telling you

ok.. i got as far as the 'restart X' part with no obvious error[1].. then running 'invoke-rc.d gdm restart' did nothing. It then says to run 'glxinfo |grep rendering'.. I had no glxinfo. Restarted and now I get different, vertical lines! + Ctl+alt+f* doesn't work (but rec mode does).

I attached the latest Xorg.0.log

[1] although I had no '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'-- I used nvidia-xconfig

File Type: log Xorg.0.log (6.8 KB, 10 views)

Not sure what is wrong, but could you try backing up your xorg.conf file and create a new one with these contents?:

Code:
Section "Module"
    Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Video Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
Then reboot to see if it works. (If it doesn't then post your latest Xorg.0.log file again, as well as the output of lsmod).
