hi all,
i am new to debian..and fairly new to linux itself.
i wanted to install knoppix, but i dunno whther to put it on a cd or i cud install it on my debian pc???if yes where and how to use it!!!
thanks
Knoppix is *not* an install solution. There's high risks of problems later on. You can use it as a bootable live cd. Burn an iso cd with the latest release (3.4). Very usefull anyway.
Otherwise, if you've got a fast connexion burn a iso cd of debian sarge installer (110M page in french http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/). Than you can install it the right way with the net install most of the default choice are the good ones.
High risks of what? I've been using it on my hd for about 2 months and nothing bad has happened. I seriously doubt they would provide an hd install scripted if bad stuff happened later on.
I think the 'bad' stuff that can happen will be if you try "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" using the standard debian repositories. Allegedly some problems can occur when you do that.

"People do that all the time and Ive never heard of it screwing up."
Do it! and report back to us.
If you want knoppix to the hd that works, install Kanotix, it's based on Sid, and those are the only repositories in the sources.list, which explains why there are no problems with it; in knoppix, you got all kinds of different repositories and versions of debian, making it a dependency nightmare.
My Knoppix V3.3 hd install worked perfectly until I tried apt-get update, apt-get upgrade over a week ago. I was left with no sound, my CDrom and CD-RW not working, my foomatic files goosed (no printer drivers found) and my nVidia graphics card no longer recognized. I'm still trying to sort it out.
As for security, Knoppix comes with ipchains and iptables diasabled by default and with just about every other service turned on. It has to be a priority to diasable everything your not using, but how many newbies can configure a firewall. I was lucky in having a mate who can.
