Did you try dpkg-reconfigure kdm? Or perhaps reinstall the kdm package to restore the startup links apt-get install --reinstall kdm.

One easy way to enable and disable services, such as kdm, is to install the sysvconfig program. First type "su" to become root, then type "apt-get install sysvconfig" to install the program, and then type "sysvconfig" to start sysvconfig. Once the program has started, you can use it to enable the kdm service. Then you can exit sysvconfig, reboot, and next you should be welcomed by the kdm login screen.

does Kde work when you try to run it as a normal user? Do you get any errors when you type "startkde". Cause this is really very weird. If you can't sort it out here try irc://irc.freenode.net/debian
