Hello,
I don't know why but KDE won't start.
I'm running Debian/Sarge and I'm currently under Fluxbox, which means I still can get an X server so it is not that bad, but I want my KDE back :'((
When I start kdm it says in the traditional KDEError window something like : error n°11 in KDEGreet
When I do 'startkde' it says :
xsetroot : unable to open display ``
xset : unable to open display ""
...
kdepersonalizer : Cannot open X server
...
Hey,
I have tried to add a new user, I have also try to start kde in root (I know it's not good) but neither worked.
I found on other forum on the internet people who had the same problem, but I never found a solution...
Please help !
you might want to try reinstalling KDE from the disks. I'm not familiar with Debian, so I don't know how this would be done, but if nothing else, you can always run the install without formatting and select ONLY KDE to install. This will install KDE over the existing KDE files and set it to default or at least should set it to default.
Also: when you signed up for an account on this board, you agreed to several conditions, one of which is you do not bump up a thread until at least 24 hours have passed.
Now then!
Does "KDE" (kwin) start for root?
If you create a new user account (e.g., "Test"), and log into X as that user, does kwin (the KDE window manager is actually called kwin) start?
If it starts in both of those cases, there are a couple of things you can try:
If, say, your username is "jib", you can log in as root, go to /tmp and look for kdecache-jib or a similar directory, and as root, rm -rf that directory. Log out, and try logging into X as jib. If it works then, the problem was you either had a corrupted cache or the system ws trying to create a new temp file with an already-existing filename and was not handling the exception gracefully, and crashes as a result.
If that didn't work, you may need to, as root, go to your home directory and rm -rf .kde, or better yet, rename it using the mv command, log out, and then log in as jib.
Sorry, I meant a user created after the reinstall.
Anyway, try this:
uninstall KDE (libs and base) again
remove /etc/kde3rc
kdm
move /opt/kde3/share/config to /opt/kde3/share/config (don't delete it - then you can move files back as your KDE/Qt apps require)
move ~/.kde to ~/old.kde in each user directory
Well I got kdm to work. I don't really know how, but maybe by reinstalling in it. (I've been playing around with many kde and kdm packages so I don't really know what I did exactly).
Anyway, I just need to do the same for kde (-;
By the way, I said gnome was working fine, actually it is not, it gets stuck during 'application preferences' in the bootsplash (but maybe it has nothing to do with my kde problem, and I don't care about having Gnome work.)
Guess what... KDE now works !!!
The good thing is I can start to use all my apps like before.
The bad thing is : I have no idea what I have changed to make it work.
Anyway, thanks to you all !!!
