KDE 3.2 doesn't start

I have a Slackware 9.1 system with 2.6.1 kernel. I manage to obtain the sources of KDE 3.2 and after I removed the kde 3.1 using pkgtool I started compiling. I compiled just qt, arts, kdelib, kdebase, kdemultimedia, kdegraphics, kdeadmin, kdeedu ... The problem is that if I type "startkde" I receive this error message:
Code:
root@darkstar:~# startkde
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
root@darkstar:~#
I can't understand "cannot connect to X server". Could you help me fix this!

Thanks!

You need to start X before you start kde, try adding this line to your .xinitrc file:
exec startkde
This way, when you use the startx command, KDE will automatically start.
