I suggest not to spend any more time on this. It's not worth it...
I just have to make one comment. I have been running Debian Sid for the last 2 years and I have never had any problems at all not like the problems that I have had when I tried using another system that is based on Deb but is suposed to be(better)Ha.I cant believe this person had that much trouble. I am running etch on another computer and I have not had any trouble at all.
Debian is the best!!

and I had a computer that was running windoze xp for more than 1 and half year without even one single crash , BSOD ,not even a single forced restart!
does that mean that windoze is good ? NO , definately not!
it means that I had luck back then nothing else or that I didn't had enough bad luck to encounter any bugs ...whatever.
about the "debian is the best" comment , Well I guess my own spaghetti coding would be better. (sarcastic)
I'm serious , nothing is the best . if you want to be realistic because every OS has bugs in it , one only has to find them , I for example found this bug , even if it's hardware related and/or distro independend , a Bug is a Bug! that's for sure.

Well despite that this was supposed to be an insult of some sort , I've to agree with it (ironic ain't it!?)
yes there is no need to spend more time on this thread, why?
because first of all , This was nothing but a bug report ! I've said what I had to say , and this isn't my software , so it's not my bug.
second , The bug is NOT life threatening , e.x I'm not gonna die or something if I don't change the system time while I play my music *giggles*
and last , I'm not in the mood to exchange bolts of flame with some folks for whatever reason...
Wow. That went from nought to pants very quickly didn't it. Entz, if you do feel it is a bug I would suggets you post to the debian bug tracker (as Reddazz suggested). I can see that you posted here to see if it was something that others had encountered. Seeing that you saw this on the Suse install, it may be a problem with the DE rather than a distro or kernel problem. Did you use the same DE on both distros?
All the more reason to stick with a hardened kernel distribution like slackware, ubuntu or Suse.
Huh? I'm running Slackware 11 with the 2.6.18 kernel. That is what Debian 4.0 is running. I have not noticed stability issues in Debian; I'm a stability freak, btw.
Debian is sufficiently hardened for my tastes. I don't run unstable distros.
sudo apt-get install xmms? I've never been too fond of Totem myself. I generally use XMMS for MP3s and I use VLC or MPlayer for videos. Those are about the only media players I need.
or set it properly so it will poll a time server and set your system clock every boot, no need to faff about. To set it up type "man ntpdate" i.e. RTFM
You could also try "apt-get moo"
However, I would recommend you remove debian entirely and use something a little less user hostile. Once you are comfortable with using the command line, try it again, and when you have learned not to throw tantrums when something doesn't work for you or at least me knowledgeable about your flames.
I just use ntp. It's amazingly simple to configure ntp in Debian, You just install it, then click on the clock and select "Adjust Date and Time" in gnome, and check the box for update from internet server.. ntp is automatically configured by the system to sync with an Internet time server at that point. What could be easier ?
Personally,
I think it's like one of the moderators pointed out, probably a hardware specific issue. As this happened in two of entz's distributions, I haven't booted up my Mandrake for a while, but the exact same thing happens for the three 64bit distributions I have. And I use Amarok, the monitor goes black and everything is quiet for up to 10 seconds, then it comes back but not the same song. Meaning it's not a "Debian" bug.

Debian Stable is widely regarded as one of the most stable distros around, and always has been and most likely always will be.
I would never put Debian Stable in the same legue as Ubuntu or Suse. They are not targetted at the same market. Ubuntu was based off Debian Unstable, not Debian Stable...
Alternatives:
xmms2 <-- I use this without gui.. for geeks only
audacious <-- It uses a libmcs or something, I don't like the concept. Also the build doesn't use deb tools for no given reason.
bmpx <-- With gui. I like this one
