How to update missing/broken file in deb package

Hi,

is there any way to update missing or broken files from the package?

apt-get install --reinstall xxxxx.deb does not replace files.

If many other packages depends on this one it is impossible to remove it and install again.

Any hints?

All the best;

if you do apt-get remove packagename then you will uninstall your files.. but it saves your configuration files, if you reinstall the package again then you'll still have your configuration files and it will work..

and it doesn't matter if a package depends on the package you will uninstall, just be specific about what you want to uninstall.. don't use apt-get remove apache2 if you meant to say apt-get remove webmin-apache2..

man dpkg, and check out the confmiss option. dpkg remembers when you delete a file, and thinks you did so for a purpose, so when you re-install, it doesnt re-install that file.

Thant is big problem I think because if you incidently delete one of important files, or you change it there is no easy way to fix it.

There should be some kind of option like "replace files" or "fix missing files from package" in apt-get or in dpkg.

The workaround i found was to download the package and then extract it with

Code:
dpkg - x package.deb /directory/where/to/extract/
and then added missing file to the tree.

All the best,
