Menu items missing and shortcuts broken after update

I have lost access to almost all of my applications on the KDE and gnome desktops after trying to run rpmdrake to update some packages on Mandrake 9.2. The start menu has emptied out, and all my shortcut links are broken.
Many applications in the toolbar have disappeared, too.

i have no idea what i did wrong! Is there any way to restore my desktop?

thanks in advance,

dave

Try log in as root in terminal by typing su and password, and the issue command "update-menus -v" (without double quote, actually).\
