hi, i am using debian kernel 2.4, i am planiing to install kde and
so i will go into recovery mode. while installation is going on
i want to use lynx browser, so how do i open a new window to do this
i did alt+F2/F3 etc but only a cursor appears on the screen.
ctrl+alt+F2/3/4/5/6/7 ,etc is what you want. But if you want to do this while the system is booting, it is unlikely to work - the environment won't be set up and neither will your network settings.
Distribution: Ubuntu, Debian, Various using VMWare

You don't need to do it using text mode, you can install KDE from within Gnome - using either apt-get or aptitude. If you must remove Gnome, you can do this afterwards.
There are no virtual terminals available in "recovery mode" (also called "single-user mode").
Like the earlier post suggests, there's no need to boot into "recovery mode" in order to install software packages in Debian. Just boot Debian the normal way, log in, use "su" to become root, run "aptitude update && aptitude install kde", and then change to a virtual terminal with Alt-F2, so you can browse the Web with lynx while aptitude installs kde.
