Question 3rd level domain e-mail address

I'm not even sure if I'm phrasing this right to do a proper search.

Here's my issue: I am running exim4 on Debian/Lenny. I can send and receive e-mails just fine, however when I send e-mails, it has the format username@mail.example.com rather than just the domain with username@example.com. I want to remove the servername from the address. I can send e-mails to username@example.com just fine.

I didn't find anything in /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf.

Any ideas?

You mailserver needs an entry in the DNS tree. That means a specific IP address has to be associated with your server and in its DNS entries an MX record should point to your server. Otherwise, search again for a sub-domain entry in that config file.
