I have just noticed, that there are sites, with top-level-domains of *.am and *.ws and so on. Since none of these domain-extensions seems to be "official", i was wondering if just anybody could start their own top level domain.
This lead me to the question:
"How could one theoretically make one's own tld name and what would be required to do so"
Well .am is for Armenia (although some people thing .fm and .am are for radio stations) and .ws is west samoa so they are official.
I think it's still ICANN that proccess new TLDs so in order to get your tld recognised you'd probably need to persuade them it's a good idea or have enough money to fund them for a few years.
Of course, if you run your own dns server and only your machines need to see it then there shouldn't be a problem with you using whatever tld you want, it's just that nobody else will see it.
I thought that these names were exclusively for some warez and serial / crack sites. I believed that these sites had their own tlds, so they can get past the trouble of being cancelled all the time.....
