Why "easy" distributions are difficult

In retrospect, I wonder why so many seasoned users have (over the years) recommended me to go for "easy" distros, that have been "scientifically" designed for all users. I wish somebody had told me to go for the "hard" ones. That would have saved me a lot of pain.
My problem with the "easy" distros has been that everything would be fine at the beginning and all I needed to know was point-and-click sequences in order to start working. Maybe some basic...

My new Linux-frienly online backup service

Tags backup, online

I've been looking for a simple and secure ('relatively secure', I should say) online service.

So far, I have my mind set on Amazon S3 for business purposes. A number of experts recommend it.
Another one I can say that drew my attention was rsync.net.

However, for personal purposes, I have settled on this one: SpiderOak. I like it for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic backup
  2. Privacy guaranteed (I'm not going to store unencrypted crucial data

I learned how to share printers with cups

Once I started learning NFS, I initially assumed that it is a Unix only version of Samba. I thought that it would obviously include sharing printers too. However, I was wrong. External microphone: very low volume

Posted 02-02-2009 at 11:45 PM by xri

At some point, while using my softphone, my voice was hardly perceptible on the other side. People would hang on me because they could hear only whispers. I could not leave messages because the answering service could not record anything. Very frustrating considering that it was working great before.
Maybe I messed with some configs as I usually do.
I tested the input through my microphone with KRec; it was all as if I my microphone was dying.
I played with the settings on Kmix...

The importance of searching LQ before asking more questions

Posted 01-04-2009 at 07:37 PM by xri

I think it's been stated a millions times, but these days it's becoming even more true.
This site and others are becoming so complete an thourough that most likely usual Linux questions have been answered in different degrees of detail. All you have to do is choosing the depth that will suit your current needs and time availability.
I visit this site very regularly but most of the time my answers are there. I don't have to add my question to the stack.
Of course posting to help...
