Ubuntu Package Pinning

A few weeks back I upgraded my Kubuntu installation to Karmic kaffeine version 1 came with it. Personally I would rather have kaffeine 0.8 so I decided to attempt to block updates to the package in order to use accomplish this.

The first step was to check the current version on the machine. So I needed to know the exact name of the package. In order to locate the name of the package I used the search function in apt. This returns matching packages with exact name and a short description...

Windows 7 - the gap is closing

When Windows 2000 was out I had poisoned some thread with the observation that the window of opportunity for Linux was closed since MS finally had an OS that worked. Looking at the "Linux desktop" years later, was I correct? Not totally wrong for sure. Now we have Windows 7 and my impression is that the gap between Linux and Windows is closing together with another window of opportunity.

Windows 7 is a new Windows. Trivial, but undervalued. Any change is a great recommended...

Set up a packaging system on an old laptop

I plan to set up a packaging-only system for VectorLinux Light on an old laptop (Acer Travelmate 212TXV). VectorLinux Light is a great, fast, lightweight Slackware-based distribution.

Stage 1: Setting up the system


Installation of VectorLinux Light 6.0

- Burned CD-R from ISO
- Installed distribution using the text-installer
- Booted
