Hardware Addition

Posted 09-27-2017 at 02:01 PM by brianL

Just bought a new toy: refurbished Dell Precision T3600, for £350. Very good condition.
Intel Xeon E5-1650
16 GB RAM
NVidia Quadro 2000 graphics card
1 TB HDD
Very nice!
Only problem so far: can't install Slackware. Hopefully soon resolved. See thread in Slackware Installation forum.

Didn't bother finding out the original price in £, but in 2012 that machine cost about $1800.

Kool Beans. My T3500's came from City Hall for free < they upgraded >

I like em. I slapped a 5 dollar Chinese card reader on the front panel with the small bay and slot for like a floppy drive. Plugged the wires into front usb pins on the mobo. Installed MX on one. AntiX on the other. They fly like the wind.

The Slackware installation problem has been solved - accidentally. The PERC H310 RAID controller was slowing boot-up to a snail-pace. I'm not using RAID, don't need it. So I took a chance and removed the controller. Mint still booted & ran OK. So I gave Slackware another try - and it installed, booted, and runs with no errors.

Decided the Quadro 2000 was inadequate and/or wrong type of card for general purpose use, so I've replaced it with a GTX 1050 Ti.

Updated the BIOS using FreeDOS on a USB stick. It was A03, it's now A15.
