installing launcher and icon on desktop zenwalk 5

Hello all,
I need advice. When I have downloaded a package to the desktop I can get the option to create a launcher and I'm offered lots of colourful icons to select from. I've installed open office using netpkg but I don't know how to install a desktop launcher (there are icons for oo available with all the others) I'm a recent convert from kde where I was used to right clicking the app for the option to create a launcher on the desktop.
Can anyone help please?

Code:
cp /usr/share/applications/openoffice.org-2.3-writer.desktop ~/Desktop
will make a desktop launcher for write. Similar for all other .desktop files under /usr/share/applications.
