I am using Vector Linux 7.1 for some weeks, after a six-year love affair with Debian (and Foresight, Ubuntu and Conectiva before that). So far the system looks good, despite some minor glitches and papercuts (some of which I solved myself). However there are some things that are really hurting -- one of them is LibreOffice.

The version provided by Vector is fairly new (5.0.0.5) and I wouldn't mind have it until the next release, but it is seems to be a monolingual build. Even after I changed the system settings to LANG=pt_BR.utf8 and the like, I still get the interface in English. That's not a problem for me, but my wife needs to use this same box, so it hurts her.

So far, this is what I have already tried to get LO in pt_BR:

a) Change settings in Tools > Options. Didn't work, only the English default is available.
b) Search for language packs in Gslapt. None available.
c) Search for language packs in Slackware repos. None compatible with the version.
d) RPM2tgz a language pack downloaded from Rpmfind.net for the same version. None found.
e) Look for newer versions in Slackware repos. None found (Doesn't Slackware pack LO?).
f) Slackbuilds.org. The binaries there are either too old (for Slack 14.0 there is only the late 4x series) or incompatible with system libraries (14.1 onwards).
g) Use Alien's SlackBuild to compile a package. No joy. Complains about Doxygen version. Tried to slackbuild doxygen newer version, but it failed. Attempt to compile LO --without-doxygen fails.

So...

What options am I left with?

If you already have LO installed, go to:
Tools> Language> For Selection> More

When you click on 'more' it will open a window giving you all languages to choose from.

Install doxygen first than proceed with compiling LO. If that fails install the dependencies in order (jdk, perl-Archive-Zip, python3, apache-ant) for LO and than install LO.

If that fails than the only other thing I think that's left is download the tar ball and satisfy make's complaints if any during compilation and install that way.

While trying to get the thing done I had the happy insight of trying LO version 5.1.6 (since the Slack Builds link to 5.1.4, but those links are dead now). It worked! LO version 5.1.6 is compatible with the system libraries of Slackware 14.0 and Vector Linux 7.1.

I know very well that I will only be able to use a newer LibreOffice after upgrading to current Slackware (which I am not sure I'll do, since my actual distro is Vector 7.1 and I fear borking the system), but 5.1.6 is good enough for me.
