xubuntu HDMI -> screen = yay, HDMI -> Receiver -> Screen = nothing. Help?

Hi peeps,

I'm trying to get my xubuntu laptop to play nice with my HDMI devices. Plugging in my monitor works - video immediately shows and after fiddling with the sound setting profiles (what a ridiculous mess?), audio over hdmi works too.

However, xubuntu (17.10) doesn't feel like connecting to my receiver. Plugging in HDMI with the receiver on simply does nothing. I have no clue what's going on. The exact same receiver setup works fine with my windows 7 (different laptop). I'm literally pulling the HDMI cable out from my w7 laptop, which works, into my xubuntu laptop, which doesn't even seem to notice. Does anyone have any idea where to start looking?

Thanks,
Simon1
