small screen on HDMI

i7-920
GeForce 560ti HDMI to 42" Sony LCD.

During boot, the bios screen fills the LCD fine.

when the boot loader menu appears to select a kernel, the screen changes size to this.

At this point it doesn't seem like X is loading.

When I don't have the tv on or on that hdmi source I get this:

I am pretty sure this motherboard does not have a VGA controller besides my Geforce 560.

In the past I had to connect a VGA cable to the GF (which is an adventure getting behind the tv) and then to the tv and reboot once. Then once I did that, hdmi starts working fine. I think this problem only happens when I have to power off the box due to it hanging up.
