X source

I have an SiS video chip, under linux the xorg (7.x) driver is sis.so

I used to run PClinux and had an alternate xvideo driver called sis_drv.so which was installable from synaptic.

Now I run ubuntu x64 and would like a similar driver. I downloaded source for a driver from here: http://www.winischhofer.net/ indeed this may be the same as that used in PClinux repos.

However, to build this I require the Xorg source tree from my ubuntu x64 repos. I cant see it in my synaptic.

Does anyone know the apt-get command line that I need to add to my repos settings, please ?

You probably need to add the source repos to your sources.list
system-->administration-->sources

OK Mr Pedantic: System->Admininstration->Software Sources

<MS User Mode engaged>
In the top right-hand corner of your gnome desktop there is a little Ubuntu logo. Next to it are the words: "Applications Places System". These are menu headers. Move your mouse so the pointer is over the word "System". A popup box, called a "tooltip" will appear telling you "Change desktop appearance and behavior, get help, or log out." Use a single left click to open the menu.

The menu shows as the list below. You are looking for the word "Administration" in the list.

Preferences
Administration
Help and Support
About Gnome
About Ubuntu
Quit

See it?
Move your mouse so the arrow points over the word "Administration". As you move the mouse over the menu, more menus pop into existence for each one. These are called "sub-menus".

In the "Administration" sub-menu there is another list. You are looking for the entry called "Software Sources".

Keyring Manager
Language Support
Login Window
Network
Network Tools
Printing
Restricted Drivers Manager
Screen and Graphics
Services
Shared Folders
Software Sources
Synaptic Package Manager
System Log
System Monitor
Time and Date
Update Manager
Users and Groups

See it?

As before, use a single left-click to activate this item. Instead of a further sub-menu, a box pops into existence with options and tabs and stuff like that. This is called a "dialog box". This dialog box allows you to alter where you can obtain and install software from.

There are five (5) tabs. These tabs are:

Ubuntu Software
Third Party Software
Updates
Authentication
Statistics

You want the first (1st) one, "Ubuntu Software". In that tab, there are six (6) radio buttons... these are:

Canonical-supported Open Source software (Main)
Community-manitained Open Source software (Universe)
Proprietary drivers for devices (Restricted)
Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (Multiverse)
Source Code

CD-ROM with 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

... by default, all of these are checked except the one for "Source Code". Click on the radio button and exit. Now you have access to the source-code repos.
<MS User Mode deactivated>

However, if you still have trouble finding the source-code you want... use your browser and go to:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/source/

... if you cannot find that, you could always use the Xorg development site and get their source code. Failing that, nobody can help you.

Note for the future: writing out full menu titles with locations ehc is a serious PITA! Thus, it is common to shorten the names. You are expected to use your head.

But you said:

... can you see the source code for anything else in synaptic?

Given your descent to insult and injury I perhaps need to communicate to you in a language YOU understand ...

all I can deduce is that YOUR head needs to be engaged a litte: I use Xubuntu NOT ubuntu and thus xfce not GNOME. Therefore, the menus are different, and "Software Sources" or indeed "Sources" do not appear. My menu says "snaptic software manager" !!

I have to say, my impression was that you were a "guru". Dear dear, dont tell me you didnt know that xfce stock install is a different setup than ubuntu stock.

Tut Tut.

Go and be condescending elsewhere, I've fixed the problem with genuine assistance from elsewhere.

I may use this on Wikipedia:Misunderstandings. Keratos, you didn't mention that you were running Xubuntu, you said Ubuntu x64 - Ubuntu uses Gnome so the advice you were given based on the information you gave was good.

Simon - your post would have been fine except for the "Mr Pedantic" bit. Either add a smiley to show it's light hearted or leave it out altogether.

Glad to hear the problem has been solved and hopefully this will be useful for someone else.

Typically moderator-ish diplomatic response.

No offence taken from Simon, I just like to give as I get, but would prefer advice to be concise and relevant :-)

Simon's was quite valid and I've just noticed I did refer to ubuntu x64 so my sincere apologies for that.

I've also noticed my signatures need updating too !. On the case !!

The server is Slackware (LAMP) and the software is Wordpress. Wordpress is extremely easy to set up and keep running, but you need database and PHP knowledge to make it do interesting things (or grab a plugin like what I do!).

Cool - I did search your posts in that thread and your sig and your profile bar before writing it. I don't like to come down on anyone if it's not obvious that they are acting poorly.

Thanks, your site looks clean and light, readable and concise - I'd like to use that as the benchmark for our department intranet. I'll google it and et.al. Many thanks.

Deftly put. I'm not sure how to take that :-) but it made me smile. I shall perform a 360degree assessment of myself and improve a few competencies !!
