Thanks to both for input.
I have had some difficulty acheiving what you asked but I now have;
C: ../drive_c
as the first line in my Winecfg>Drives
In all other resdpects this table is now as shown in my Post#8
Also fstab is still as shown in Post#13
In home/name/.wine/drive_c I have 2 folders;
Program Files
Windows
These folders do not contain my Windows files/programs
If I am going in the right direction, what is my next step?
Thanks for your patience.

Oke, try this:
remove your wine configuration (or backup it): rm -rf ~/.wine
Then use winecfg again and use fake windows drive (../drive_c) (I think it's default option), then try to install some program using wine.

Thanks Melinda, it now works !!
When I download an application it appears on the desktop, I drag and drop it into the root directory of the false windows system which in my case is /home/name/.wine/drive_c
From the terminal I type wine c:\\applicationsetup.exe and it is installed.
To run the application needs wine c:\\home\\name\\application.exe and away we go.!!
A few applications work like this but most do not, Linux has a long way to go. (and so do I)
Thanks for all your help and patience
