Proper steps for installing software using "Wine" ?
Hey Guys,
There is a Windows mp3 software program I want to install on my Mandrake 10.0 using the wine program. I have tried several ways of doings this, double clicking on the "wine" icon and so forth, but can anyone give me some tips on how to do this?
The way you install Windows software with Wine is to open a terminal window, browse to the directory where the Windows exectuable file is and type wine ***. For example, if you were trying to install Winamp.exe the command would be wine winamp.exe {Enter}
well...I always use command line...if you're in the directory the setup file of the app is, then just
wine setupfilename.exe
where setupfilename.exe is the filename of the setup that installs the app..if you've configured your wine, then it launches the setup and lets you install the app. at least this is how it works on me just make sure your wine's config is ok.
The program is on my CD rom disc, here is what I tried to do:
[stan@yahoo.com cdrom]$ wine AutoRun.exe
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/sam/.wine'...
cp: cannot stat `/usr/share/wine/wine.inf': No such file or directory
wine: wineprefixcreate failed while creating '/home/stan/.wine'.
[stan@yahoo.com cdrom]$ wine ezmp3.exe
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/stan/.wine'...
cp: cannot stat `/usr/share/wine/wine.inf': No such file or directory
wine: wineprefixcreate failed while creating '/home/stan/.wine'.
[stan@yahoo.com cdrom]$
and this did not work. Can you install off a Windows based CD Rom?

Hey guys can anyone give me any tips on how to configure wine properly?
I was able to get the autorun.exe program to take on my windows related mp3 workshop software and it went through all of it's set up & install commands, but when I got to the part that says finish, it gave me some sort of Internal error code: C100 - got a runtime error.
Is there anything I need to do to proprely set up wine? I ran the RPM install and it's in the scroll-up menu under emulators, but is there anything I have to do to set it up?
I say this becase it appears to be buggy. Sometimes when I am looking inside the Wine File manger the window shuts down on me.
Also what is the purpose of the wine swepper?
Again I thought I was going to be able to get MP3 Workshop to work, but I failed. Any suggestions?

basically you can configure wine by editing it's config file, which should be either /root/.wine/config or $home/.wine/config
the file itself is just a textfile, and you can edit it with any text editor. it also has commented lines (that start with either # or ; so those lines are not read by wine) that tell you pretty much the things you need to know. scroll through that file to see what you can change..for me the basic config that comes along with wine didn't work, I had to switch the version Wine imitates to anotherone, and also set up some paths etc.
If you don´t want to tackle editing the file yourself there is a tool available from the winehq.org page called Wine Tool, you have to intstall it as root and run it as a regular user. It gives you the ability to create a ´fake´ windows drive, install windows fonts, install windows system files (dcom98, c++ runtime, VB 5 or 6 runtime, etc). Once installed you launch it from a terminal window by typing wt
