Question Why is gnome-volume-manager (instead of /etc/fstab) used for mounting external hdd's?

I am currently trying out Ubuntu (after being a long time Fedora user) and although I have never expected it, I kind of like Unity (except for that launcher panel which it seems cannot be disabled/hidden). However, I stumbled upon some problems regarding the mounting of external drives.

Whenever I connect my external drives, Ubuntu automounts them to /media/xxxx. Which file do I have to edit or which command do I have to run to change this setting?

I am comfortable in editing /etc/fstab. However, I read on the ubuntu help wiki that fstab is generally used for mounting internal drives, CD/DVD devices and network shares [1]. External drives *can* be mounted using fstab, but they are typically mounted by the gnome-volume-manager (gvm).

My questions (in order of importance to me):
1. Why* are external drives [i]typically[i] mounted by gvm, instead of in /etc/fstab?
2. Where or how can I edit this gnome-volume-manager**? It seems this file/command is not on my system.

*: I really couldn't find an explanation of WHY external drives are typically mounted by gvm.
*: i tried searching, but unfortunately not much luck did I have in finding something useful. I did find some information about the gnome-volume-manager and what it does. However, I'm trying to find specific instructions on how to change mount options with gnome-volume-manager using the command line (more specifically, which file do I have to edit?).

- I use ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

1. to automate the process and remove the need to enter your password
2. check gvm's documentation, and also gconf (gconf-editor). ubuntu/unity is doing its best to hide all these things from the user (friendly!), so good luck finding them.

Ubuntu is the Linux version of MS Windows, the do it all, but hide it away system for 'newbies'.

Having said that (), gvm is used by other distros to auto mount/unmount filesystems.

Like you, I prefer to allow users to mount external media, as and when needed; however, doing it this way with 'newbies' could lead to corrupted filesystems if they forget to unmount before removing.
