What do I add to compile/make files?

Hi all,

I've got Ubuntu installed on my laptop (Older Dell Satellite) and it works fine.

Now I need to make and intall some software including the latest versions of wlan-ng and some others. My old distro (Fedora) had all the needed components pre-installed to do this but it looks like (for good reason - one CD) the Ubuntu system does not. Since I'm still a little new at the Linux game could someone let me know which extra components I need to install to be able to compile and make files? I'm running the latest release of "hoary". Thanks in advance for the help.

I had a dickens of a time making ubuntu play nice with the things that other distro's worked with out of the box. In my case I got rpm2targz and changed the rpm's that came from other distro's into tar.gz files and installed them like that. After awhile I just installed ubuntu onto my toy system that didn't require installation of anything the o/s didn't support because ubuntu is one pain in the neck having no libraries and compilers. I suspect 5.10 will be better and have my fangers crossed!

EDIT: I also got the source files from ftp.gtk.org and ftp.gnome.org and so on....

You can also try apt

man apt

apt-get update

apt-get install <package>

Sharkee,

Thanks for the tip!

Unfortunately after I sucessfully ran the apt-get command and the install went fine with no errors I still get the following when I try to make the latest linux-wlan package:

-------------- Linux WLAN Configuration Script -------------

The default responses are correct for most users.

Build Prism2.x PCMCIA Card Services (_cs) driver? (y/n) [y]: n
Build Prism2 PLX9052 based PCI (_plx) adapter driver? (y/n) [n]: n
Build Prism2.5 native PCI (_pci) driver? (y/n) [n]: y
Build Prism2.5 USB (_usb) driver? (y/n) [n]: y

Linux source directory [/lib/modules/2.6.10-5-686/build]:
Linux source tree /lib/modules/2.6.10-5-686/build is incomplete or missing!
See the HOWTO for a list of FTP sites for current kernel sources.

Configuration failed

make: *** [config] Error 1

I also tried installing the 2.6.10 kernel sources with synaptic (as noted in the error message) but maybe I got the wrong ones or the install script is looking in the wrong place. Any ideas?
