Probably the best way to check this out is for you to compare your Internet settings in your working Kubuntu against your Internet settings in your non-working Ubuntu. Try these commands:
lspci
will show the hardware on your PCI bus that the OS recognizes. Do both Kubuntu and Ubuntu recognize your asdl card?
ifconfig -a
will show whether your OS has successful started your Internet connection. If the asdl modem is your only broadband Internet connection then your Internet interface should be eth0.
One of your problems on Ubuntu may be that /etc/resolv.conf is not being set up properly. You can test whether resolv.conf is the problem by entering the two following addresses into your web browser:
If you get through on the number address but not on the name address then you do not have /etc/resolve.conf set up properly.

This problem could be because of your Internet connection problem or it could be a separate problem. What error indications are you getting when you use apt?
