USB icon not showing on desktop

Hi all,

I'm on 7.10. When I plug in my Sony voice recorder, I don't see any icon come up on the desktop. lsusb shows my Sony voice recorder, so I guess that Ubuntu is seeing it, but where is the icon or how can I access it? Also, Nautilus doesn't show it on it's side bar either. I'm kind of new to Linux and don't know where to go and what to do from here. Thanks in advance for your help.

What do you get if you run the following from the command line?

Code:
fdisk -l

try using 'mount' to see if your device is mounted or not..!!
if it is, then u can access it in /media/dir, where dir is the place where it is mounted..!

Sorry for the very late response.

lsusb shows:

Code:
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 006 Device 003: ID 054c:0271 Sony Corp.
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 413c:3200 Dell Computer Corp.
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 413c:2105 Dell Computer Corp.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
So it sees the Sony device.

fdisk -l shows:

Code:

/dev/sda2 9606 9726 971932+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
mount shows:

Code:

devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
lrm on /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/volatile type tmpfs (rw)
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
fusesmb on /home/mina/Network type fuse.fusesmb (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,max_read=32768)
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Also, if it's any indication of a problem, I just installed Win XP under vmware and Device Manager doesn't show any USB devices at all.

seems that HALD is turned off by default in 7.10 not sure why....
it may not even bee installed,

if not get it, or turn it on then it should work.
i had the same problems but that solved it
