On a ubuntu platform [bugtraq] was trying to update everything and over a thousand updates were downloaded, but when 6 or 7 of them were 'NOT FOUND', program refused to install all the others which had been downloaded. This is the data I received:[QUOTE]

Hi...

While the site itself comes up, it doesn't appear that one or more files you need are available to download. For example, the first one listed in your post is "libisc83_9.8.1.dfsg.P1-4ubuntu0.17_amd64.deb," however, only "libisc83_9.8.1.dfsg.P1-4ubuntu0.19_amd64.deb" is available. You might need to upgrade the program that requires them or install a newer version of Ubuntu, if possible.

Your software sources are an interesting mix of Precise (April 2012) and Trusty (April 2014) versions. Mixing repositories like that is not recommended or supported. I would recommend to reinstall and start from scratch, as your system is likely in a broken/unstable state. In the future be very careful when setting up your software sources; when in doubt, don't modify these important system settings!

bugtraq is a penetration testing distribution based upon either Ubuntu or debian. I am not familiar with bugtraq and do not know how the developers configure their sources. I agree with mixing repositories could really break your system. Did not find much information...

I was able to narrow the problem to one problem file [may have to try the recommended reinstall, but as have a lot already done, am giving one more effort to fix it as is].
Is it possible to delete this one problem file [causes the software index to be broken] without sabotaging all else?
Get Error message that goes:
/var/cache/apt/archives/libpython2.7-stdlib_2.7.6-8ubuntu0.3_i386.deb:'./usr/lib/python2.7/pydoc_data/_ _init_ _.py' is different from same file on the system.
There is an option to delete it under "filters", but would this help or harm the system?
