Unbuntu Installer Locks on IBM Thinkpad

Hi last night i tried installing ubuntu DVD on my Thinkpad
I had to use Text Install
(Start live and Install never got past the first Question)

It manages to fetch user data, install base system, Fetch system files,
but once getting past "configuring Xorg" the screen turn black with two white character blocks.

and sits there for an hour.

Tried Kubuntu DVD after that but same issue in exact same place.

Tried disabling acpi apic and apm

Anyone have an idea of the cause?

Use the alternate iso

I have had similar issues with Ubuntu (Dapper) on several laptops. I do not believe it is specific to the Thinkpad. What I had to do was download the alternate iso and install the old fashioned way. It really is better to do it this way anyway. By the way, the Ubuntu forums are full of posts regarding this so take a look and see if there is any better advice by now.

I selected the Server Install option and seemed to get through the installation

using Apt-get and installing x server and KDE seemed to work without any hiccups :S
