unable to enumerate USB device on port 4

Hello,

Thanks for clicking on this post.

Doing a dmesg I can see following lines

[ 136.539472] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4

Can anybody tell me why the USB device on port 4 could not be enumerate.

And most important for me... what does it means ?¿

If i run lsusb, I get

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 1241:1177 Belkin F8E842-DL Mouse
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 007: ID 046d:0896 Logitech, Inc. OrbiCam
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

That is what I have exactly pluged, the webcam on the top of my screen and an external mouse.

Btw, I can plug USB devices with no problem, so I am skiping this error since long time ago, but I don't understand this message and I would love to do it.

Thank you for your time,

Blessings,

You're not the only one experiencing this problem:

* After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.4 to 9.10:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/367060

* Both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/256767
Potential workaround:
Quote:
I solved using in boot mode the option noapic nousb
* After upgrading from Fedora Core 8 to Fedora Core 9:
http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=192930
http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=190070

* It seems this cropped up around kernel version 2.6.25:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/4/26/217

* Here's a bug report for Debian (again, kernel 2.6.25):
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=485692
<= Per this bug, it should be fixed in kernel 2.6.26 (Debian Lenny)

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Cool ZENks

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your reply.

Just one question more, how could I set these option in boot mode. Should I hack grub config file ?

Thanks for your time

Blessings,

Today I upgraded from opensuse version 11.2 to version 11.3 and now I am experiencing this issue with the USB dongle for a Plantronics .audio 995 wireless USB headset. My other USB devices such as keyboard, mouse, TV receiver and flash drives are all working fine. So far I have not been able to get the USB dongle to be mounted at all, so I can't use the headset. Novel support has information on this kind of issue: http://www.novell.com/support/search...eID=DT_TID_1_1 but the suggested workaround didn't work for me.

Btw, I can plug USB devices with no problem,

Could it be that some USB port/hub is broken? This seems to be a common problem for example on some older IBM Thinkpad machines. According to some forum discussions this is an Intel hardware problem.

I had this problem on my old laptop and it resulted in very slow access to an external optical drive. I solved it by buying an PCMCIA - USB adpater for ~ USD 18. Of course the messages are still there from the broken built-in port. But the additional ports work like a swarm.

USB is a messy thing. There are 2 or 3 drivers on the same port somehow. Mouses and keyboards use the low-speed, older "fast" devices full-speed and current external disks etc. high-speed. I don't remember the details. The involved protocols are UHCI and EHCI at least. But if some device works, you cannot conclude that everything is OK, it might well be that the other protocol is broken.

Hi,

After some searches and solutions that didn't work for me , I found this: http://www.absolutelytech.com/2010/0...ling-ehci_hcd/
and it worked for me.
Didn't find why the load average kept staying over 1.5 but now it has decreased below .5 because of the warnings on syslog disappearing.

Regards

enid: I tried that, and with ehci_hcd disabled I just couldn't use my usb ports at all. any more ideas? anyone know why that would happen for me?

btw, that guide says to unbind "the" 0000:* entry, but I had two. 1a appears to be the webcam and mic. 1d is the actual usb ports. I tried all combinations; no luck. this is on a lenovo x220 thinkpad with opensuse 12.1.

@Chani
I also have two files but I tried manually which one of them was the correct related with the USB controller.
I still haven't found a right solution and I execute every reboot the "echo..." line, but I see that after the execution the load average decreases and dmesg messages disappear, but the transmission rate when copying to/from usb decreases.
But since I am not using USB very much I haven't searched for an definite solution.
