Also the Linux distro's that I have used seem to hang up the internet on me after only a few minutes is there a way to stop this without having to download things constantly? Thanks in advance!!!!

Search the HCL, and find a better more linux friendly modem.
Modems are picky under linux, and most Winmodems don't function correctly.
I'd suggest one that is Intel chip based, as they tend to have a bit more speed.
