I have been rying Kubuntu 5.10 and I have to say that it did pretty well in configuring most of it, but there ae still things I need to install.
I initially tried sarge on this laptop but it looks like the kernel 2.6.8 had trouble with ACPI on my hardware so usb wouldn't work etc ..
On Kubuntu this is just fine. A few thing though:
1- what about codecs, dvd playback support such as libdvdcss ...?
I have uncommented ubuntu reps on initial sources.list and but couldn't find them?
Should I include debian reps in the sources.list ? what about the risk of packages that would be in both ubuntu and debian reps ?
2- my usb mouse was detected and seems to work except that there is an irritating inertia. what could be the reason? the
settings on xorg.conf and kde are same as in my previous debian install.
3- what about quicktime, flash, java etc ...for firefox where do I get them?
2) I had a similar problem with one mouse in Ubuntu. That same mouse/machine combo had a slightly less obvious problem when I tried FC3. I thought it was a slow machine, when I tried Ubuntu and everything was faster except the mouse. I swapped it with another mouse, and the next mouse functioned as I'd expected. I've noticed similar problems with this mouse on everything including Windows and it was a MS mouse.
There might be a setting to clean this up, though.
Should I include debian reps in the sources.list ?
No. In fact, if you ever add non-Ubuntu repositories, you should add them, quickly install only what you need from them, and then remove those repositories.
