I installed Ubuntu 7.10, No real problems till I started searching through the menu's and clicking on things I should probably have left alone!!
Problem: I have no sound! This is probably something I did but I don't know what or if I did anything. I don't think it's the system but something I did that shut down the sound! Any suggestions?
Can you use the graphical tool for the sound volume and make sure the volume is not set at zero or muted. Perhaps you can enter alsamixer at the command prompt and check.
1. Information on the sound card/chip on your system, ie. Soundblaster 16.
2. The output of lspci
3. Like the previous poster wrote, what does alsamixer show?
Please let me know if you need any more info from me, and if so.. HOW to obtain the info clearly.. as I am really not used to Ubuntu or Linux as a whole.
Cliff885, I really wish I could help, I realize how frustrating it can get, but I'm brand new myself. I investigated the menu's and saw what kind of sound chips/card I had installed and then I just searched through my system till I came up with anything on "SOUND" then I selected the sound card (name) I had and that was it.
Basically you just have to start investigating and trying. I really wish I could be of more help, but I'm not sure how I did it to be truthful.
If I were you I would make a separate post explaining exactly what I had and what I was missing. Then these guys can help, they really are willing and very experienced, just give it a go!
Good Luck.
PS. I might add that gradually you will start to pick up the jargon and learn more than you know!! However you have to actively ask questions pertaining to your particular situation.
I had a quick lookup of this error after finding this thread. It unfortunately seems to be a known bug for this particular chipset, and quite an obscure one. One fix suggested was the following:
Open the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. There are any number of ways of doing this, one such way is to press Alt-F2, and in the box that comes up, enter the command "gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base" without quotes.
Add the following line at the end (again without quotes): "options snd-hda-intel model=auto".
I also am having this same problem. However, when I access Sound Preferences, I have no devices to choose from under Device, which is under Default Mixer Tracks. I have done everything that you suggested for Cliff and none of that worked for me. Thanks for your help.

Hey "coppab" , maybe you should try and give some system details like me and a few others have, so that people who COULD help, would have some info to help them help you?!
Yes?! (i.e. What kind of Chipset yuo have etc.)
Also...
So is there ANYBODY out that who can help us...?
What are we doing wrong??!
This is probably the ONLY bad thing about Ubuntu for me..
but it is pretty annoying.. :S
