Sound problems with ubuntu 4.1 and a realtek sound card

Hey all you linux gurus, i'm having some problems with my sound. I'm guessing it must be a driver that i need, though i can't actually find one for my realtek sound card (I'm running ubuntu 4.1), so if anyone has anything that could help; please do so. It might not be my sound card, just whenever i try and listen to an mp3 the media player displays the error:
"failed to open; unknown reason"
-this is with Totem.

Check for the complete name of your sound card. If it contains - "AC'97" then you're in luck. You can try the following command:
modprobe snd-intel8x0
If you see a mesage like module not found or something similar then, this module was not compiled in. You will have to recompile kernel by slecting the AC'97 driver in the configurator.
