A lot of persons like desktop icons, or at least got habituated to them from Windows and MacOS. It's probably just a link to your home directory.

In many desktops, you can right click on the icon to remove it without affecting the contents of the actual directory. It would help to know what desktop environment you are using.

Is your home directory mounted from a separate partition?

Go to Settings > Appearance > Desktop Icons > Show Personal folder

Remove home folder from desktop (Ubuntu 22.4)

In "settings" select "Appearance". Then, under "Desktop Icons" turn off "Show Personal folder".
Easy to do; not so easy to find.
Sorry. I see tech-otaku has already suggested this.
I have done it and I find that I can put files on the desktop (though I usually choose not to)
