I have a recent build of ubuntu 145.4 64 b .
This is a dual boot machine with win 7 64.
the win 74 boots and runs fine.
but My ubuntu 14.04 64 b .... will hang , freeze. locks up.
requires a cntl alt sysR , r,s,e,i,u,b
I think the hardware is fine ... since windows runs fine.
and keeping the windows side "good" is important to me.
My Q is : can I "repair" my ubuntu 14.04 64 b with the install dvd ...
might such a "repair" be advised?
how might I "heal" the linux side?
I have several dual boot machines ... this is the 1st time I have seen this.
What is the brand and model (and model number) of the system in question and what have you done so far in attempting to diagnose the issue, if anything?
I booted to a the ubuntu 14.04 install dvd -- in "try" and it runs fine
it seems that the "install" of linux is wacked .... not sure.
As chance would have it -- it is the win 7 64 ( that is OK ) that is most valued
.
again this is a recent build ... replacing an old mach , special duty , legacy software - replacing a ol xp32 machine.
in truth -- the linux ( ubuntu 14.04 64 ) is largely just for me and other duties
so What I - must not do - is in attempt to repair the linux : that is less valued...
that i mess up the grub and screw up the win side : that is very needed .
so
boot to linux , with diff users -- locks up in minutes , starts ok but eventually mouse frz , locked up
but boot to same os , same machine ( live cd in "try" ) seems to run fine.
I think the hardware is fine ... since windows runs fine.
and keeping the windows side "good" is important to me.

Hi...
This issue could be the result of a number of different things. If you would, please open a terminal and post the results of this command...
Code:
lspci -nnk | grep VGA -A 12
If you have a Nvidia chip, perhaps the information here might be of help.
Quote:
the machine is a HP wx8400
Did you mean xw8400?
Regards...
