Ubuntu 10.04 Network manager problems?

I've been having a problem keeping version 10.04 working on my computer. First I installed 10.04 which worked great for a few days and then after an upgrade the eth0 would not connect. I uninstalled 10.04 and installed 9.10 which worked great. After a couple weeks I figured they must have fixed the problems by now........so I upgraded to 10.04 again. Worked great for 3 days and again my wired connection died and would not reconnect. I've tried everything I could find in the forums that seemed relevant anf finally installed WICD (may have name spelled wrong) but couldn't figure out to get rid of the normal network manager. WICD ran but couldn't connect through the wired network either. Anyone have any idea what the overall problem is and if anyone is actively working on it? Seems like every time I upgrade I end up spending a lot of time trying to get everything to work. For now I have gone back to Windows 7 until I can reinstall 9.10. Is there another version of Linux that doesn't have such bad growing pains all the time? Thanks for any help. Sorry for the vent....

don't fret, everyone gets frustrated at times... here is a problem I encountered that may be somewhat similar...

When I would re-boot or after a few re-connects, the system was basically transferring my connection from eth0 to eth1, or from wlan0 to wlan1... i will see if i can find the exact issue... i should of documented better...

anyway, if you are feeling froggy... go ahead and leap back in. once you run in to the issue again, make a post and i'll work it with you.

wicd can't work if network manager is running.
So uninstall network manager.
Then use wicd which works better than NM for everything, except mobile-phone dongles.

Ubuntu 10.04 Network manager problems...continued.

Sorry for the delay. WICD did work after I rebooted but for what ever reason I could not get the ethernet to work on Windows 7 which quit working at the same time as Ubuntu. I finally just reinstalled Windows 7 and due to family medical problems that is as far as I've gotten. I've got to drive to California this week so maybe I'll try again next week.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!

Norman
