there are plenty of options when you right click on nm-applet. Otherwise try usign kill command/remove software

but there is no clear point of doing that apart from lowerin ubuntu memory inpact.

false answer!

if disable network on network-manager
or remove network-manager (apt-get remove ... )
then network is not working.

However, the files /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf configured properly

Why do you want to disable networkmanager?

And your point is?
Tell us what you want to achieve.
If you don't like networkmanager,
remove it, and install wicd.

Have you done this:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

?

Show us the /etc/network/interfaces
