No soundcard in here.
Maybe your card is ISA.

Phoaroh,
Funny, I just went through that exact same sequence - lspci says nothing about any sound card. The following gave me a whole lot more info (I'm running Debian Sarge 2.6.8):
go to /proc/asound/oss, then look at sndstat. (I use more to dump files to the screen, you can also use less or cat)
It told me that I didn't actually have a sound card, and my driver is an ALSA emulation.
Just going to /proc/asound and typing more *
will tell you a lot about your sound system. I just discovered the proc directories and finally don't miss my RedHat hwconf file.
Now to find the answer to my question: why am I getting such fantastic sound without a sound card??? Spooky.

Ooops! Just noticed this is Ubuntu forum. I've read Ubuntu is a Debian derivative - hope it's close enough for my post to be applicable.
Otherwise, I do apologise - still learning!

sad to say it, but i have unfortinately turned my old crappy compaq back to windows (at least I just swapped hard drives). Ubuntu wasn't recognizing my sound card and I read up on it and theres a lot more work to be done than I really find necessary. It came down to 10min hard drive swap or hours of linux troubles.

Sometimes it's just the best thing to do - discretion and valor and all that.
Best of luck with old/new setup.
