Recommend what type & Brand name of MODEM!

Hello

This is Paul again I still have not got my Modem working in UBUNTU since it is a WinModem. Can anyone out there recomend a replacement for it that will work with UBUNTU & my computer which is an HP Pavilion a705w. That does not require a lot of research on the internet. PLEASE HELP ME I"m about to go nuts over this.

Thanks,

Paul

Any non-Winmodem should work fine. I don't have particular knowledge to Ubuntu, but all non-Winmodems speak the same language. External models are better because most of them support the AT command set, and the lights help with diagnosis. Get one with serial connections. The USB ones are strange.. may not work.

There are drivers to run Winmodems on linux, but last time I checked, they were commercial proprietary drivers that were sold for 15 USD (there is a free trial version of the driver that won't allow the modem to connect faster than 14.4k).

Smartlink 5634PCV Surfrider is a PCI card like winmodem that dosnt need any software to run on linux. I removed my winmodem from my other machine that runs both Windows XP and Linspire 4.5 and replaced it with this Smartlink. It seems to work equally as well on both Linux and XP and has giving good connections for the past two years. I understand that the 5634PCV is the only smartlink modem that is compatible with linux.

Good Luck,
