Your getting the error, because Linux is IPV6 Capable. and you have set the hostname of the PC and tried to resolve it is the FQDN. That is all it is doing. It was telling you it couldn't take the hostname and turn it into a IPV6 Hostname

I used GProFTPD to set it up. It is by far the easiest way.
It's in the repos.

pure-ftpd

how about pure-ftpd? I had used proftpd forever, then I began having issues that I didn't really want to trouble-shoot. so I picked up pure-ftpd. It's a quick compile and you run it "out of the box" there are command-line options to configure at runtime; you need to enable features when running the configure script. Then it just works. Check it out: http://www.pureftpd.org/project/pure-ftpd

you won't use the inet daemon to call it, so you'll need to comment out the current ftp lines for pure-ftpd to run properly.

very fast and secure. easy way to set up for others to access files not in their home directories: symlinks. check out the ln manpage (that's "ell en" for LiNk).
