I am trying a lot to play audio/video files in it but not being able to do so.
I have tried totem player,Xine,Amarock and many more but it is saying that

The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder plugin which is not installed.

so what should i do now. Kindly help me out in this regard.

You need to install the multimedia codecs. Here's a guide.

Install the w32 codecs from Medibuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
This will give you the windows media codecs.
If you ever run into a media file that won't play on Ubuntu, then just play it with Totem media player: (applications > Sound & Video > Movie Player. If Ubuntu needs to install a codec to play the file it will prompt you to install the necessary codecs, then the file will play. This will work for audio as well as video files.
