playing VCD and HSP56 modem driver

I've installed Ubuntu 6.06 a few weeks ago. because i'm completely new to linux, since then i hav been trying to play videos, play mp3 and also install a driver for my HSP56 modem. I'll explain what i did so far

playing video :when itried to play video using totem movie player it showed me an error 'No URI handler implemented for VCD'.Please tell me what all packages i have to insatall to play a vcd and mp3

modem: i don't know much about my modem. It worked perfectly with Windows. I think its a winmodem. When i take device manager in ubuntu, it lists a HSP56 serial micromodem. but when i tried to configure ppp it detects no modem in my system. i downloaded a driver for HSP56 modem, compiled it and inserted the module. But i think it also doesn't detect my modem. I'm confused. i also cannot figure out which port it is connected to. i don't know what to do.its difficult for me to solve other problems(mainly playing vcd and mp3) without internet at home.

I'm really interested in linux. But now i'm strucked at the start itself. Please help me
