permissions/mount

ok, fairly new to Linux alone, let alone Kubuntu. But I am ruuning into a couple of minor issues with moutning/sharing. I have done these same steps in other distros without a problem.

-- Ok, i created a folder /mnt/Folder from the console using root to make a location for my windows vfat dir to mount to. It seems to only give it root permissions, has a plug-in on the icon. Owned by root and grouped in root. I even tried putting me in the root group

-- I update FSTAB to mount and everything mounts correctly. I can view it in Konqueror and console, but appears to be read-only. this is how i mounted fstab: /dev/hda5 /path/ vfat defaults 0 0

-- Using SMB4K as a client, I can scan it, it finds it, i go to mount it there and it gives me a permissions error. I can see my desktop from my windows laptop, can view it but appears to be read only.

-- I looked in Settings-> File Sharing, it is listed there and says it is writable and public viewable.

-- smb.conf has been modified: workgroup is same name as my windows laptop. security is set to share, the share is cretaed guest ok = yes, path, writable = yes, read only = no

any ideas, on the windows mount, it is only read only for me as a regular user on my desktop. I would like all access. I think once I get the permissions worked out, it will all work as advertised.

Thanks!

fingered it out.

I changed my fstab from

/dev/hda5 /mnt/PATH vfat defaults 0 0

to

/dev/hda5 /mnt/PATH vfat umask=000 0 0

well just when I thought I fingered it out.... well I did mostly. doing that up above made it so that on my kubuntu machine I now have full permissions to my windows mounted drive. cool

I also, from my windows laptop can see my kubuntu shared windows mounted drive and have full access. cool.

but now within SMB4K I can see both my windows laptop and my kubuntu shared drives, but can not mount them. When I try to mount the Windows Laptop I get the following error:

smbmnt must be installed suid root for direct user mounts (1000,1000)
smbmnt failed:1

any clues?

Thanks a bunch!

Did you figure it out?

I know this post is about 6 months old, but I'm having the same error come up and now I don't know what to do. I saw on another forum that i need to type these commands
Code:
sudo chmod 4775 /usr/bin/smbmnt
and
Code:
sudo chmod 4775 /usr/bin/smbumount
and all that did was make it so it almost mounts the drive and then the icon dissapears no error messege or anything. I also realized that Smb4k can be configured to run mounting as root in its configuration settings, but when i try to set it to do so it gives me this error
Code:
/bin/sh: kdesu: command not found
Any ideas from anyone would be great.

Thanks

Try chmod u+x then chmod u+s for /usr/bin/smbmnt and smbumount. I will warn you this will cause security concerns but it will work. I am assuming this is what you are trying to do though?

sweet!

"Try chmod u+x then chmod u+s for /usr/bin/smbmnt and smbumount"

that worked for me... i was having issues with smb4k giving that "smbmnt must be suid..." error

thanks!!

libsmb based programs must *NOT* be setuid root.
