I currently have Ubuntu 5.10 installed on a Compaq 5003US desktop. I would like to set up the Compaq IJ1200 printer that came with it. Linuxprinting.org website says to use the lexmark z42 driver. I've tried to setup the printer through the OS but I can't get it to print. I tried unsuccessfully to set this printer up in Ubuntu 5.04 and finally gave up. I'm now going to try it again. Where do I start?
I'm a linux noob so I could use some help please.
I would use the CUPS web interface. I have next to no experience with Ubuntu, so I don't know about the distribution-specific options you have. You can navigate your browser to http://localhost:631 and start looking around in there. You should have a link to documentation, and you can search the web for a ton of CUPS howtos. You could also just go straight to "Manage Printers" and try setting up your printer that way. You will have an option to print a test page straight from the web interface, and that may be a decent way to see if the installation went alright.
I have tried the Cups interface at localhost:631 and also tried the Ubuntu printer wizard. Neither worked. I have tried to go through some how-to's at linuxprinting.org with no luck. I seem to remember something about the owner/group for /dev/lp0 but I can't find the page where I found it before. I have tried to get this working before on Ubuntu 5.04 and gave up after about 2 months. I need some help from someone who knows the ins and outs of cups. I have read the docs but can't seem to fix the problem myself. I would be happy to post some config information but I don't know what to post.
hello,
i am a noob so take what i say with caution.....
I am using breezy, and use turbo-print. Now cups is good, but wrongly tried to set up the printer on the wrong port. I changed it to /dev/usb/ip0 and hay presto the test page came flying out of the printer, and they were both holding hands. This was using cups, but turbo-printer has a manual-configure so it was easy to get the printer going, again assigning the correct port. Thats all that was wrong, and the reason that i use tp is because i need high res print outs....hope this helps ?
Thanks unionjak,
I'll look into turbo print. I've tried three different printers on two different PCs both running ubuntu 5.10. I can't get a single character out of any of them. It seems like every time I remove/re-install a printer I get a different set of problems. Currently I'm getting the client-error-not-possible (or something like that, I'm not in front of one of my Ubuntu boxes) error. Before I wasn't getting any errors, just no output. Ubuntu is awesome at everything else, but the printer support sucks. I may install the kde desktop so I can try the KDE print manager, I've had pretty good luck with it in the past.
