Natty - What is new about the Unity "new look Dash"?

I have read about it, looked at screen shots of it but I don't think Unity runs on a virtual machine yet so I have not laid hands on it. Still it looks to me like a remake of the old Windows 3.x "program groups" concept (at least it was called something like that back before the fall of the Roman empire). Am I missing something? Looks like a waste of space to me to have all the program and file icons in a box instead of tucked out of the way along a panel.

Either Canonical has too much free time or I a definitely missing the point of this. Can someone enlighten me?

TIA,

Ken

When I loaded Meerkat on my netbook, the Live CD and the fresh install both defaulted to Unity.

Frankly, I failed to see the point, unless it was difference for difference's sake.

I couldn't recreate the simple elegance of Fluxbox fast enough.

"Program Groups." I had forgotten them. Memory lane.
