modem problem in kubuntu


i am not able to start my modem
it is an externel modem,and work fine with all linux distros (DFM 560)
i wonder what i am missing??
i get "unable to open modem "in query section of kppp

also pppconfig is not able to identify that serial port
i have to choose manually

it is working fine in slackware

eventually i ended u installing all packages from the ubuntu CD as well using
dpkg with the recursive option
now ,my modem is responding
but there is new problem with this internet connection
